FIRST At a Glance
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders. FIRST’s mission is to make young people into leaders of science and technology fields by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that boost self-confidence, communication between peers, and leadership skills.
“To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”
-Dean Kamen, Founder
Gracious ProfessionalismTM, coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST National Advisor, is one of the values of the program. With Gracious Professionalism, students are encouraged to learn and compete like crazy, but at the same time, treat one another with respect and kindness. This way, members learn how to be competitive but also show good sportsmanship.
Unlike Gracious ProfessionalismTM, CoopertitionTM produces innovation by cooperating with the competition. Based on the concept that teams can and should cooperate with one another while competing, CoopertitionTM encourages fierce competition and assistance to others when possible.
